Izamal, the City of the Three Cultures, the City of the Hills or the Yellow City, is one of the main Magical Towns of Mexico, in the state of Yucatan. Its hospitable inhabitants have managed to preserve the architectural jewels of their past and offer them in perfect harmony with their rich traditions, crafts, gastronomy and the comforts of modern life.
It is considered the first city founded in Yucatan and its extraordinary attractions make it a golden jewel and one of the most beautiful Magical Towns in the Mexican Republic.
His lordship and endearing greatness speaks to us of the importance that Izamal has had in pre-hispanic, colonial and contemporary times. It protects important testimonies of the Mayan culture, like its five great pyramids, and the viceregal life, like the huge convent of San Antonio de Padua.
The archaeological zone of Izamal is formed by a ceremonial square delimited by five pyramids, four uniforms and one greater, the Great Pyramid, in which is the temple of Kinich Kak Moo, dedicated to the god Itzamná, dew of the sky, which was the main deity of the city and who gave it a name. From the top of the Great Pyramid, not only you can enjoy a splendid view of Izamal, but also you can appreciate the sacbes, or white roads, that the Mayans built towards the nearby cities of Kantunil and Aké.
The other great attraction of Izamal is the immense convent complex of San Antonio de Padua, with the temple of the Immaculate Conception, converted here into the Virgin of Izamal. It has the largest atrium in Latin America and the second largest in the world; the buildings beautifully combine Plateresque, Moorish and neo-Gothic styles; inside the temple is the image of the Virgin of Izamal. It was built on the vestiges of a prehispanic platform in the Pap-hol-chac.
Izamal is also called the Yellow City because most of its houses, buildings and monuments, including the gigantic temple of San Antonio de Padua, are painted yellow, which gives the population an unparalleled golden appearance. In 1993, Pope John Paul II visited Izamal and that decoration in yellow and white was reaffirmed, being the colors that identify the Vatican.
The prestigious cuisine of Yucatan can be enjoyed fully in Izamal. From the typical markets to the sophisticated restaurants of Izamal they offer the delicious mestizo touch of Yucatecan cuisine, in dishes such as: beans with pork, stuffed cheese, salbutes, papadzules, panuchos, pipianes, cochinita pibil, pimes, joroches, pours, tamales , yuccas, pumpkin sweets, etc., accompanied by xtabentún, posol, balché, and others.
Izamal is also a good opportunity to acquire Yucatecan crafts. From hats to hammocks, from pottery to saddlery, from ceramics to joinery, you can find the main expressions of Yucatecan crafts, in an immense variety and at all prices.
